Semi-Homeade Cinnamon Rolls

For breakfast this morning I decided to make cinnamon rolls for my husband, since he LOVES cinnamon rolls.  We did not have the pre-packaged cinnamon rolls, but I had crescent rolls on hand and decided to find the recipe online.  There were many similar ideas I had found on pinterest, but they were all fully homeade.  I did not have the time and all of the ingredients to try to make homeade bread, so I googled Crescent Roll Cinnamon rolls and found the recipe.  With that, I began my cinnamon roll breakfast baking this morning:

Ingredients:

  • Crescent Rolls (1 package)
  • Butter (Earth Balance butter is soy butter)
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Frosting
  • Small baking pan
  • Wax paper

Before you begin, be sure to pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.  Then you can begin to prepare the recipe.  First you will open the crescent rolls and split it into 4 rectangles (instead of 8 triangles).  Then lay each rectangle out and start to smear a thin layer of butter on one side of the crescent rolls, like so:

Next you will want to smash on a thin (very thin) layer of brown sugar.  You don’t have to cover the entire rectangle, this is going to make it extremely sugary and give it a very sweet after taste.  I used about two teaspoon-fulls of brown sugar and it was very sweet, so you could do with one good spoonful.  Once you have spread the brown sugar on the rectangle, then shake on the cinnamon.  Again, you don’t have to fully cover the rectangle.

Then you want to roll up the rectangles, with the cinnamon on the inside.  It also helps to squeeze the end closed.  Be careful, because the rectangle may slip when rolling it all together once you pick up the roll to pinch the end together.

Once you have finished rolling all of the rectangles up, you should cut the rolls into pieces. Almost like cutting sushi rolls, except it’s mini cinnamon rolls.  It seemed to work best for me by using a cerated knife which helped me not to smash the dough too much.

I then lined up all of the pieces into a buttered pan, and put it into the oven.  Don’t forget you should have preheated the oven to 350 degrees.  I always check my baked goods since my oven can be a little touchy, so I checked it at 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 12 minutes.  We actually let the cinnamon rolls bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees without the edges being burnt and the center cooked.  Once I removed them from the oven, I added the frosting to part of the cinnamon rolls and let it melt.  If you don’t have frosting in a can, you can also make your own with milk and confectioners’ sugar.  Here is a photo of the cinnamon rolls before and after.

Hope you enjoy the recipe!  And remember, go easy on the brown sugar!  You can always make it more sweet by adding icing.
